Making 3

My two random words were “Lip” and “Society.” This piece is a visual exploration of how voices are perceived and utilized within society. This collage is a commentary on the diverse experiences of individuals within a society—how some voices are amplified and misused, others are stifled or ignored, and many remain unheard despite their silent cries.

  • The lips with tongues sticking out symbolize those in society who use their voices for negative or harmful purposes. Those who speak without regard for the consequences.
  • Some lips are depicted with fingers shushing them or are partially shown. These represent individuals who are forcibly silenced, either by societal pressures or direct suppression. Their voices are not just unheard but actively muted.
  • The images of lips that are closed and appear more opaque signify those in society who are suffering in silence. These are the individuals whose struggles go unnoticed.

Train Tumble – Darko Skulikj

So I used the random word generator to find two random words and make something out of it. I really wanted to challenge myself and only ran the program two times and it gave me the words Train and Tumble. Now this would be my third time making a soundscape or in this case a song but I really want to challenge myself in this area so I opened up audacity, worked up some quick lyrics and here we are.

The lyrics:

Grind On the Tracks

Verse 1:
Strapped up, ready to tackle
Hustle on the train, no time to dawdle
**** with me, you’ll catch the rattle
My grind unstoppable, like a rolling paddle

Chorus:
Grind on the tracks, never stumble
Tumble through the hustle, never crumble
**** the haters, stay humble
Grind on the tracks, yeah, we hustle and rumble

I cannot sing so I decided to use a text to speech generator and worked out a beat for the background. In the end it all came down to this:

Reading response – Art and Fear

The text strongly emphasizes the importance of maintaining artistic integrity in the face of external pressures for acceptance and approval. It reminds us that true art often emerges from a deep, personal connection to one’s materials and ideas, rather than through collective decision-making or adherence to societal expectations. Historical examples in the text underscore that innovative art is frequently not understood or appreciated immediately, illustrating the need for artists to be steadfast in their unique visions. Moreover, I think acceptance and approval can often be a matter of timing and cultural shifts. For example, let’s consider modern fashion trends; previously, many styles were not widely accepted, but today, they have become the choice of many people.

In my opinion, preserving one’s original vision and staying true to oneself are essential for any artist. This approach not only defines the authenticity of the work but also leads to more fulfilling personal and professional growth. Sticking to your original ideas despite potential criticism or misunderstanding ensures that your artistic output remains genuine, ultimately attracting the right audience and opportunities that align with your true intentions.

In essence, by keeping your vision at the forefront, you can navigate through external opinions and trends, using your authenticity as a compass. This not only sets your work apart but also helps you reach the place where you truly want to be, resonating deeply with both your values and your audience.

Making – 6

I chose two words from the random word generator: Draw and Ladder.

Idea

In this piece, I depicted a ladder inside a house in Berlin, using it to symbolize practical tools that assist in everyday urban life, such as reaching higher areas for maintenance or decoration. This representation underscores the importance of simple, functional objects even in a bustling city environment.

The choice of Berlin as a backdrop reflects the city’s commitment to integrating lush greenery and vibrant public spaces with urban living, enhancing the quality of life. Trees and mountains surrounding the house emphasize this blend of nature and urbanity, a hallmark of Berlin’s landscape.

Above the scene, a large yellow pencil floats horizontally, reinforcing that this image is a creation of art. This placement not only highlights the act of drawing itself but also metaphorically suggests that creativity and practicality can coexist harmoniously, enhancing our urban environments. The pencil, akin to the idea of ‘draw’, serves as a creative tool that shapes our perception and interaction with our surroundings.

This artwork celebrates Berlin’s dedication to maintaining green, lively environments within its urban core, illustrating how art and everyday utility can together foster environmental awareness and enrich city life.

June 4 – Mariam

For this creation assignment, I used the random words “sour” and “comfort” to design a unique home decor concept using www.coohom.com. I envisioned a room that blends soft, comforting elements (to resemble comfort) with bright, zesty accents to create a dynamic yet cozy space (to remember sourness). The color palette combines soothing, muted tones with vibrant, citrus-inspired hues.

 Art & Fear Response:

I really connected with the core point about not getting too hung up on seeking approval or acceptance from others for your art. The examples really hammered home how having that outward focus – craving validation from critics, audiences, or even peers – can seriously undermine your creative process and artistic growth.

The stories about later artists like Weston and Adams just mimicking the original visions rather than pushing them further was an eye-opening cautionary tale about how chasing acceptance can lead to an artistic dead-end. The tough love anecdotes of blunt rejections from teachers also highlighted how the only approval that truly matters is your own assessment of whether you’re advancing your craft.

Fears about others (reading)

The struggle between staying true to one’s art and meeting external expectations is real, and a true understanding of art, especially ones art takes time. Acceptance and approval of one’s art has its challenge in balancing personal expression with what the viewers expect, I think trying to have both is not impossible but very unlikely and difficult to do. Trying to control the way others view our work is impossible; while we can guide them or showcase a specific perspective, everyone perceives and interprets things differently. It can be hard if the art itself is completely misunderstood. However, I think once we put our art out there, we should not be concerned with how it is interpreted but be intrigued by the many ways different people make meaning of it.

Reading Response 7, Art & Fear (37-47)

The way I view the whole acceptance and/or approval thing is as follows:

At any given point in time, a particular person might be considered the greatest to exist in their field—think of figures like Galileo, Euclid, Newton, Leibniz, Euler, Einstein, Feynman, etc. As someone starting out in the field, I would aspire to achieve the recognition that such a person had in their time period. But if I were to reach that level of greatness, would I be satisfied? How could I know if I am the greatest of my time period or of all time periods? There isn’t a reliable measure to compare the contributions of Newton and Einstein. Who do we label as the genius of geniuses? If we were to swap their eras, would Einstein have discovered the theory of gravitation like Newton did? Would he have sat under the same tree? Would Newton, if he lived in the early 1900s instead, have been able to develop the theory of relativity given the pre-existing theory of gravitation?

We cannot know if these individuals, placed in different times, would achieve the same accomplishments. Since the answer is likely no, one should not focus too much on acceptance or approval since what is considered art is one era might not in another. As the book mentions, the reward for recognition might arrive later, or even, never. Thus, focusing too much on acceptance hinders creation. Copernicus was a madman then when he proposed a heliocentric solar system model. Today, he is a man of science. Had he been too focused on acceptance, Earth would still have been the center of the universe. A bit pompous of us should I say. Therefore, what we can strive for is the goal to become better than we were a moment ago (a cliché, yes, but important nonetheless) because that is actually measurable.

Ben – Reading Response 7

Relating back to the class, it seems that the default is acceptance: we don’t really argue whether someone’s creation in any of the making activities is really art or not. We simply treat it as a ‘making’, and that’s it. I find this really nice as someone wholly unfamiliar with art and art making, since I don’t have to worry about whether what I am doing even qualifies as art, because if it doesn’t, I would assume an automatic 0 and some ridicule.

Approval is a different story though. Aside from the grades, which actually only account for the level of effort and not likeability, there are some levels of peer approval going on whenever our making is shown in class: a few great ones get some clapping, mediocre ones get a passing glance. We are not trying to sell our work or something, so this doesn’t matter that much in the long run, but I just want to say that what is in this reading chapter is very much applicable to what we are doing in the class.

Words: Compound & Firm

I made a music score.

Please don’t read the following part before going through the music score.

I made a music score based on archival images of “depressed mom”, which are the keywords I searched. The score requires participants to actively perform it. I think pain is abstract, personal, and unquantifiable, especially when it comes to mental pain. That’s why I need the participants to express it in an abstract way using their sound.

My words Compound & Firm leads me from the British Royal Family to postpartum depression. Find more below:

Thought process

  1. British Royal Family, because they are always referred to as firms. Compound is a collection of at least two elements.
  2. Why think of royal family? Because of the whole Megan drama of the officials using AI to generate her photo while people think she is missing. Compound? My high school chemistry.
  3. My parents graduated with Chemistry majors. But I hate it. My worst subject.
  4. My mom stops working in chemical firm after having my sister. Megan is now an influencer mom.
  5. Wow. commonality.
  6. Baby raising? Family responsibilities? Baby fingers?
  7. How to resolve postpartum depression?
  8. Pain is abstract.
  9. Fragmented
  10. Firm and compound: you have to be firm.
  11. Compound: made of multiple things.
