Final Essay – Majid

The course description for “Creating” was just as mysterious as the name. I had really no idea what I was getting into when I got enrolled in this course. I got to find out that this course focuses on all the aspects related to the creative process.

I was surprised at first when I realized that there was a meditation portion of the class. At first, I thought it was weird and frankly pointless, however, I began to see some of the benefits after a few classes. Whatever I was feeling in the morning whether it was stress or anxiety was reset to a neutral and relaxed state after the meditation. The meditation techniques also assisted me in being more aware of my thoughts. I began to understand the concept of being a separate observer of your own thoughts. I realized that my thoughts were just paths that I could choose to engage with rather than being those thoughts themselves.

The making assignments were by far the most integral part of this course. Due to how open-ended the creating activities were at first, I was anxious. The scope of the making assignments was so wide that I had no idea where to start, I felt a sense of dread that I would pick an idea that was not good enough. However, the professor’s emphasis on the learning process rather than the finished product was reassuring to me. One of the main challenges I had was coming up with new ideas every day. The specific issue that was stopping me was that constant internal dialogue critiquing the idea before I even give it much effort. To overcome this, I had to push myself to suspend my judgment of the idea and give it room to grow and see where it goes.

The class and studio visits were highly informative that illuminated the realities that working artists confront on a daily basis. It was remarkable to discover how many of the artists held opposing views, such as Ming and Markus in the way they treat and communicate with their audience. Some had well-defined creative processes, while others were hazy on the details. Each artist had their own distinct approach to the creative process, which demonstrated to me that there is no ideal method to create, just what works for you. Hearing about the hardships that artists confront was eye-opening. Overall, the class and studio trips improved my understanding of how art is created. They also demonstrated the challenges of being an artist and inspired me to embrace the ups and downs of the creative process.

This course’s readings have been helpful in understanding precise and practical ways for entering a state of lateral thinking. The major two strategies that I found effective were asking why to the thoughts that came to mind first, and then thinking of five alternatives to our initial idea. This enabled me to develop a disciplined strategy that prioritizes creative thinking. Many of the obstacles that artists confront from themselves and society are addressed in Art and Fear. It helped me comprehend my own perception of myself as an artist, even if I do not pursue it professionally. There was only one reading from the book “Flow,” however it was the one that captivated me the most. I’ve had instances in my life when I was entirely absorbed in what I was doing, which was referred to as flow, but it seems to happen at random. Following the reading, I had a clear concept of how to increase my chances of attaining this flow state. Overall, the readings provided me with insights into various yet overlapping topics related to creativity, productivity, and self-perception. This has increased my understanding of artists and their work, as well as how I approach my own creative endeavors.

Overall, this class has improved my understanding of the various parts of the creative process. I learned various ways of coming up with concepts and ideas via the class and readings, as well as the realities of being an artist through class visits and vacations. I feel my ability to express myself creatively has improved over the last three weeks, and I view myself as more adaptable and open-minded in how I tackle problems. Although I will not be pursuing a career in the arts, I am confident that what I learned in this course will be useful in solving any challenges I may have in the future by coming up with fresh and creative solutions.

MAKE – Save Guarantee

My 2 random words were Save Guarantee. When I first saw this I thought of a discount voucher for shopping. That I used the lateral thinking technique of asking why? I questioned why this voucher should be for shopping. After thinking for a while I remembered that Professor Aaron said that he would allow us to be late for one class because he himself was late for the studio visit. So I decided to combine these ideas to make a late pass/voucher for the class.

Class Trip – Kollage Kollectiv

Was not what I was expecting from the website but was also pleasantly surprised.

It is interesting that they repurpose already used/ thrown away items.

Pursue an idea but stay flexible on the way to achieve it.

Not letting finances limit your creativity or goals

Class Visit – Harshini

She was charismatic and I liked that she was trying to be engaging with the class and ask us questions

She had an interesting capstone project

Her description of Berlin seems pretty accurate (even the bad stuff)

Relatable as an NYUAD alumni

Midterm Paper – Sheikh Zayed Mosque

Majid Ibrahim

For this assignment, I picked the Sheikh Zayed mosque as my art piece. Although it may not be a conventional piece of art such as a painting, I find it to have moved me deeply just as any other piece of art would.  I have lived in Abu Dhabi my entire life, and this mosque has served as my go-to for nearly all significant religious occasions.

The grave of the late Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan resides within the gardens of the mosque. In my opinion, he was a great leader who pioneered the development of the UAE. He is a man I deeply respect, so having his resting place within the mosque makes it have an important place in my heart.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

One of the reasons the mosque has had an impact on me is because of the sheer beauty of its interior and exterior. The pristine white marble on the floors and walls creates a sense of purity and tranquillity. Coupled with this, the golden palm and colourful flower designs create a unique visual image of elegance and nature coming together. This results in a profound sense of calm enveloping me as I enter the mosque. It’s almost as if I’ve entered another world where there are no problems and only peace.

As I enter the mosque, I am greeted by massive crystal chandeliers, a wall covered in the names of God, and the lingering scent of incense. The Imam of the mosque is always a clear and expressive reciter, I find it easy to enter a meditative state. When put together, these elements contribute to an atmosphere of utter serenity and devotion.

It is not only the architecture that has made an impression on me, my personal connection with the mosque stems from my own journey of self-discovery and faith. The Sheikh Zayed Mosque holds personal significance for me because of the memories I’ve made within its sacred walls. I recall many different years of me praying the Ramadan and Eid prayers there. This mosque has been a constant presence in my spiritual development from the beginning to the present day, always accompanying me on my journey of self-development.

When I see this mosque in the distance while driving by, I feel at home, not just physically, but also emotionally. I think that the many memories I have had in the mosque have contributed to this feeling of attachment and belonging to this place. In addition, many people travel long distances from all around the world to visit this magnificent mosque; I am grateful for the ability to visit this mosque at any time because I live only ten minutes away.

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque moves me deeply for a variety of reasons, including its design and architecture, my personal memories of the mosque, and its cultural significance. It is a testament to the harmonious blend of art and religion, and it has left a lasting mark on my soul.

Class Visit – Ephemeral Tomorrow

Majid Ibrahim
Ephemeral Tomorrow’s work consists of making the world’s invisible phenomena visible while injecting their own artistic flair into the visualization of these phenomena.

Their use of datasets is a highly interesting concept for transforming real-world happenings into something that catches people’s attention. It makes me wonder about all the other things that can be visualized in a unique way.

Despite the fact that none of the team members are scientists, there appears to be a lot of research that goes into understanding these scientific processes before beginning work on any art project, which is also consistent with what we saw at Field.

From my capstone work, I discovered that researchers are usually open to having their findings used in other projects; it is interesting to have this confirmed by the visitor as well.

Reading Response – Flow (pp71-77)

Majid Ibrahim

I found this reading very profound as I have experienced the state of flow many times when playing video games. For me, it is a state where I am suddenly performing at a very high level relative to my own standards. My focus increases to the point where I do not think of anything other than what is happening in the game. The game also becomes immensely enjoyable for that period of time. Every time I play it is a battle for me to enter this flow state. I never understood what caused the flow state to happen up until this point.

The diagram the author drew of the challenges vs skills was very enlightening to me as it shed light on the general conditions of how flow is achieved. This made me realize that every time I entered flow when playing a game it was when I was just barely able to beat the level or opponent. I think that by understanding how flow works, we can plan our actions and pursuits to help us get into this state. This can help us do things better, get more done, and enjoy them more.
