The first episode is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves' Batman and I imagine those who haven’t seen the latter will be a bit lost. But I watched Batman a while ago, and this series did a great job of quickly reacquainting me with where the movie left off without getting bogged down in a didactic recap. It also captures the film’s aesthetic and somber tone nicely, though the series has many more moments of slyness.
frivolity than was the case in the film
As in Batman, Colin Farrell brilliantly portrays the Penguin as a stereotypical mobster "streetfighter:" rough, profane, tough, and quick to violence; but also smart, cunning, and able to read people. That the character may have absolutely nothing to do with the comic book version, but he’s interesting in his own right. I’m skeptical about the show casting the Penguin as a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if the Penguin’s scheming will be enough to sustain a full season.
